The original P{lacW}slmbP245 insertion, and several kb of genomic DNA has been removed, including a large part of the 3' UTR as well as the first exon of slmb.
slmb26 somatic clones induced during first and second larval instar stages, wing duplications occur very rarely, whilst legs frequently exhibit bifurcations. In addition ectopic legs exhibiting anterior and posterior structures are observed. slmb26 somatic clones induced during the third larval instar stage cause wing phenotypes consisting of ectopic veins, wing margin bristles and small outgrowths affecting only one of the wing blade surfaces. Ectopic bristles look like anterior margin bristles when located anteriorly and posterior ones when located posteriorly. However by adulthood there are no clones of slmb26 cells present. When clones are examined in the leg disc, they are often spherical in shape, however 72 hours after clone induction no slmb26 cells remain. The clones are associated with apoptosis 12 hours post induction and 48hrs later by sorting-out of the slmb26 cells.
