Detailed Description

The eyes of flies that express NcGMR.PH show retinal degeneration.

Expression of NcGMR.PH does not cause retinal degeneration.

Flies expressing NcGMR.PH have normal eye morphology.

Flies expressing different lines of NcGMR.PH show various degrees of eye disruption. Flies expressing low levels of NcGMR.PH show no outward phenotype. Flies expressing intermediate levels of NcGMR.PH show cell death late in retinal development. The eyes are normal in size and shape, but are largely white due to loss of retinal pigment. All retinal cells, including photoreceptors, are missing. Flies expressing even higher levels of NcGMR.PH have small eyes and third larval instar eye imaginal discs of these animals show high levels of cell death.

Additional Comments
Genetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

An IceΔ1 background does not significantly suppress the retinal degeneration phenotype of NcGMR.PH flies.

Expression of NcGMR.PH in norpA36 retinae slows down retinal degeneration but does not prevent it.

The rough eye phenotype of BacA\p35GMR.PH animals is not suppressed by NcGMR.PH. Flies expressing NcGMR.PH and thGMR.PH have normal eye morphology.

Flies expressing intermediate levels of NcGMR.PH and also heterozygous for th5 have small eyes. The small eye and pigment loss phenotypes of flies expressing high levels of NcGMR.PH is suppressed by co-expression of thGMR.PH. The small eye phenotype of flies expressing high levels of NcGMR.PH is not significantly suppressed by co-expression of BacA\p35GMR.PH.
