Homozygotes look phenotypically normal and have no obvious homeotic phenotypes. Homozygous females or females containing homozygous germline clones lay eggs which look normal and are fertilised, but fail to develop.

phol81A ; pho1 double mutants die as third instar larvae and fail to pupate. The brain is smaller than normal, the disks are misshapen and smaller than normal and the salivary gland polytene chromosomes are enlarged in double mutant third instar larvae.
