p53E8 homozygotes exhibit a severe increase in the proportion of hyperplastic testes, as compared to heterozygous or wild-type controls; these testes exhibit an accumulation of Bam-positive maturing spermatogonia and a significant decrease in necrosis (as shown by the number of spermatogonial cysts bearing TUNEL-positive cells) at their apical tip, but no changes in the size of differentiating spermatogonia and spermatocytes, as compared to controls; mutant spermatids undergo meiosis, but some onion-stage nebenkern spermatids showed micronuclei or had no apparent nuclei, which suggests a defect in chromosome segregation; cystic bulges are rarer and the migrating individualization complexes are often morphologically abnormal, as compared to controls.

p53E8 is partially rescued by Scer\GAL4nanos.PU/p53UAS.Dp53
p53E8 is partially rescued by p53UAS.DΔNp53/Scer\GAL4nanos.PU
Both the significant proportion of hyperplastic adult testes in p53E8 homozygotes and the increased necrosis at the apical tip of those testes are rescued by the expression of either p53Scer\UAS.Dp53 or p53Scer\UAS.DΔNp53 under the control of Scer\GAL4nos.PU.
