ScerGAL4Gr68a.PB drives expression in the following series of neurons. Larval gustatory receptor neuron of the hypophysis VP1 and VP2 where it is coexpressed with ScerGAL4Gr66a.1.8 and ScerGAL4Gr33a.4.7. Larval gustatory receptor neuron of the hypophysis VP3, where it may coexpress with ScerGAL4Gr28a.PT.

ScerGAL4Gr68a.PB drives expression in sexually dimorphic prothoracic leg taste bristle chemosensory neurons - male tarsal segments have more neurons than females - and male specific prothoracic leg non-neuronal cells. Leg neurons send axonal projections to the thoracico-abdominal ganglion that then extend to the adult subesophageal zone and antennal mechanosensory and motor center. These projections in the adult subesophageal zone and antennal mechanosensory and motor center directly interact with EcollexAGMR61H07 expressing adult Tachykinin neurons of the central nervous system as shown by a positive GFP reconstitution across synaptic partners (GRASP) signal.

ScerGAL4Gr68a.PB drives expression in two gustatory receptor neurons of the larval ventral pharyngeal sense organ (VPS or hypophysis).

Expression was sought in olfactory organs but no expression was observed on the surfaces of the olfactory organs, the third antennal segment, or in the maxillary palps. Intense signal was observed in the second antennal segment in auditory neurons beneath the cuticular sheath. Expression was confirmed in chemosensory neurons of male-specific gustatory bristles on the forelegs. The gustory foreleg expression is not observed in females but they do have multiple stained cells in the forelegs, including three with intensive expression at the base of the leg near where the chordotonal organs are located. This expression is seen in all female legs as well as in the midleg and hindleg of males. A closer look at the male midleg shows expression at the root of mechanosensory bristles. The male genitalia show intense expression at the base of the clasper teeth and on the anal plate. The labellum shows non-sex-specific expression at the tip in a region that houses cell bodies of many gustatory neurons. Signal is also observed at the wing root, the wing margin and on the female abdomen. In the brain, expression is observed in antennal projections to the antennal mechanosensory and motor center (AMMC). Posterior to the suboesophageal ganglion, Gr68a processes form a commissure connecting the bilateral AMMCs. No expression is detected in the antennal lobe.

ScerGAL4Gr68a.PB drives expression in the gustatory neurons of a subset of gustatory sensilla in the prothoracic male legs. These same sensilla are also labeled by ScerGAL4CheB42a.PX although expression is found in different cells of each sensilla.

Adult expression is observed in chemosensory neurons of about 10 male-specific gustatory bristles in the forelegs.

Activation of Scer\GAL4Gr68a.PB-expressing neurons results in reduced sensitivity to (S,Z,Z)-CH503 (a more potent stereoisomer of the gustatory sex pheromone CH503): in contrast to wild type, flies do not exhibit courtship defects in the presence of (S,Z,Z)-CH503.
