Gyc-89Dae01821 mutants show a similar attraction to 1% agar containing 100mM sucrose as wild-type. They show similar avoidance to 1% agar with 10mm caffeine as in wild-type but fail to show caffeine avoidance to lower levels of caffeine such as 1mM caffeine in 1% agar.
Recordings from s6, a S-type sensilla of the labellum, reveal a significantly reduced response to 2.5mM caffeine in Gyc-89Dae01821 mutants. The mean number of impulses recorded is about half that from control flies.
Homozygous third instar larvae do not show defects in general locomotion.
Homozygous third instar larvae show a defect in the normal hypoxia escape response; mutant larvae which have been allowed to burrow into the food and commence feeding take significantly longer than control larvae to leave the food when exposed to low oxygen concentrations.
Mutant larvae shifted to mildly hypoxic (17-20% oxygen) or hyperoxic (22-30% oxygen) conditions respond in the same manner as wild-type controls, with a significant reduction in the number of stops and turns in their locomotion. However, if they are shifted to a more severe hypoxic environment (11-15% oxygen), the mutant larvae show no behavioural response and maintain their area-restricted search with a high number of stops and turns (wild-type controls show a significant reduction in the number of stops and turns under these conditions).
