Homozygous animals derived from homozygous females stop development as first instar larvae (as defined by their mouth hooks). The presence of a Su(var)3-7+ chromosome in either the mother or the progeny allows development to proceed to adulthood. Su(var)3-7P9/Df(3R)Su(var)3-7-P13 animals derived from Su(var)3-7P9 homozygotes do not develop into adults.
When P{P-Sal}89D is present, the w gene of the P{lacW}ciDplac insertion variegates, resulting (in a w- background) in an eye that is mostly white with a few patches of red ommatidia. This P-element-dependent silencing of P{lacW}ciDplac is dominantly suppressed by Su(var)3-7P9. The strong vestigial wing phenotype of vg21-3/Df(2R)vg-B animals is suppressed by P{P-Sal}89D. This suppression of the phenotype by P{P-Sal}89D is not affected by the presence of Su(var)3-7P9. Su(var)3-7P9 suppresses w+ silencing caused by P{KP} elements on P{lacW}ciDplac. Su(var)3-7P9 suppresses silencing of P{lacW}ciDplac that occurs in P strains such as Harwich and π2.
Su(var)3-7P9 is rescued by Su(var)3-7+t6.5
