Unlike wild-type wings GliRAR77/Glidv5 mutant wings have regions where wing hairs are arranged in 'chevrons' on an otherwise normal wing. Homozygous mutant wings have patches of wing hairs that show disrupted alignment. Glidv5/GliRAR77, Glidv5/Glidv3 and Glidv5/Glidv1 and homozygous mutant wings also occasionally exhibit a deformed wing hair phenotype: numerous hairs are bent and abnormally thin Glidv5/Glidv3 animals also exhibit a wing hair chevron phenotype and patches of non-parallel alignment. This phenotype develops after prehair extension, as prehair pedestals at 38 h after puparium formation (APF) are normal in mutant wings. At 47 h APF prehair pedestals are tilted within the epithelial plane and are narrower than normal in cross section. Glidv5/Glidv3 wing cuticle remains flat in regions of disrupted hair alignment, although it appears rougher than wild-type. Blisters are also sometimes seen at the distal margin.
