The mushroom bodies of ssh1-63 mutant flies show axonal growth defects at the lobe region but not the peduncle.

ssh1-63 mutant clones of the α/β lobe of the mushroom body show slightly increased F-actin levels at and around the core region compared with wild type controls.

Homozygous mushroom body neuroblast clones in the adult that are generated in newly hatched larvae do not have any obvious reduction in cell numbers compared to control clones. However, these clones show axon growth or axon growth plus guidance defects. In "severe" cases, the axons fail to extend beyond the peduncle and guidance defects are also detected at the peduncle or from the dendrite region, in "strong" cases, axon growth defects are seen in the dorsal and medial branches, and in "weak" cases axon growth defects are seen in the dorsal branch. Homozygous neuroblast clones in the optic lobe or antennal lobe contralateral projection neurons fail to cross the midline, in contrast to wild type.

The axon growth and increased F-actin phenotypes seen in α/β lobe mushroom body clones expressing LIMK1Scer\UAS.T:Ivir\HA1 are suppressed by sickScer\UAS.T:Disc\RFP-mCherry. ssh1-63 reverses this suppression, with LIMK1Scer\UAS.T:Ivir\HA1 sickScer\UAS.T:Disc\RFP-mCherry ssh1-63 triple mutant clones showing the more severe highly elevated F-actin and 'posterior arrest' (failure of axons to extend to form peduncles and lobe structures) phenotypes seen in LIMK1Scer\UAS.T:Ivir\HA1, ssh1-63 mutants. The phenotype seen in LIMK1Scer\UAS.T:Ivir\HA1, ssh1-63 double mutant clones is more severe than in either single mutant.

Expression of psidinScer\UAS.cKa under the control of Scer\GAL4slbo.2.6 in a ssh1-63 heterozygous background has little or no effect on border cell migration.

The rough eye phenotype of mbtP3 hemizygous males is suppressed by ssh1-63/+.
