The expression throughout development of Xbp1d08698 under the control of Scer\GAL4NP5130 leads to a significant decrease in the proportion of mitotic cell in the midguts of 25- to 55-days old adults, as compared to controls; expression under the control of Scer\GAL4unspecified in adult midgut clones results in a significant decrease in clone cell number at 7 days after clone induction, as compared to control clones.

Expression of Xbp1d08698 in the developing eye under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF has no effect on eye development.

Co-expression of Hsap\APP2xAPP.SP.Scer\UAS and Xbp1d08698 in the developing eye under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF significantly improves both eye organisation and size compared to expression of Hsap\APP2xAPP.SP.Scer\UAS alone.

Hsap\APP2xAPP.SP.Scer\UAS flies co-expressing either Xbp1d08698 in the developing eye (under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF) show milder degenerative changes in the retina compared to flies expressing Hsap\APP2xAPP.SP.Scer\UAS, indicating Xbp1 protects against the progressive degeneration of photoreceptors induced by Hsap\APP.
