        Expression of ScerGAL43A was observed strongly in 6 vertical system (VS) neurons which, along with the three horizontal system cells, stood out from the surrounding fluorescence. Using MARCM, four VS neurons were specifically labelled.

        Optogenetic activation (using Cnoc\ChR1::Csub\ChRCsChrimson.IVS.20xUAS.Venus with 617 nm (red) light) of Scer\GAL43A cells in adults during the day significantly reduces daytime sleep and significantly increases nighttime sleep following this activation, unlike controls; activation results in a significant reduction in daytime sleep bout duration, with no effect on sleep bout number, compared to baseline, with no effect on nighttime sleep bouts following activation.
