    Description

Insertion at position +111 in the first exon of stwl. The insertion is oriented such that the ATG codon at position -3 in the inserted P{Mae-UAS.6.11} element is in frame with the coding sequence of stwl, allowing overexpression of a putative protein with the first 37 stwl amino acids deleted in the presence of a Scer\GAL4 driver.

Homozygous females are sterile and do not lay eggs. The females have rudimentary ovaries depleted of post-vitellogenic eggs, but the germaria are hypertrophied, containing abnormal egg chambers.

Expression of stwlUY823 under the control of Scer\GAL4en.PU at 21[o]C or 25[o]C results in lethality. At 18[o]C, 25.6% of animals survive to adulthood. These escapers have notches in the wing margin.

Expression of stwlUY823 under the control of Scer\GAL4vg.PM results in lethality at 25[o]C. At lower temperatures, some animals survive to adulthood. These escapers have notches in the wing margin and prominent hyperplastic buds on the wing hinge.

Expression of stwlUY823 under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF results in lethality at 25[o]C. At low 21[o]C, some escapers are seen, which have glassy eyes. At 18[o]C, viability is 81.4%, and the adults have rough eyes.

The hinge and wing pouch regions of wing discs expressing stwlUY823 under the control of Scer\GAL4vg.PM have multiple, prominent folds resulting from an excess of cells.

Wing discs expressing stwlUY823 under the control of Scer\GAL4en.PU show massive hyperplasia, with the posterior part of the disc being much larger than the posterior part of control discs. Cells in the posterior part of the disc show increased BrdU labelling compared to anterior cells, indicating an increase in the number of cells in S phase. Cells in the "zone of nonproliferating cells" (ZNC) in the posterior part of the wing pouch are labelled with BrdU, in contrast to the ZNC cells in the anterior part of the wing pouch. Apoptosis is seen in the posterior part of the wing disc.

Larvae expressing stwlUY823 under the control of Scer\GAL4fkh.PZ have smaller salivary glands than normal. The salivary gland cells and their nuclei are also much smaller than normal.
