Scer\FRT-mediated recombination has produced a line in which the insertion is still present but deletion of approximately 1200bp of genomic sequence flanking the 5' end of the insertion has occurred.
Hemizygous third instar larvae have large gaps in the lamina with numerous abnormal thick axon bundles projecting into the medulla. Many mistargeted R2-R5 axons project into the medulla. This phenotype is 100% penetrant. The morphology of the R8 growth cones is abnormal.
Homozygous R8 axon MARCM clones show severe targeting defects, failing to stay in their appropriate target zones and straying into neighbouring regions. Homozygous R2-R5 axon MARCM clones show appropriate targeting to the lamina region.

wgn22 is partially rescued by wgnUAS.cRa.Tag:FLAG/Scer\GAL4sca-109-68
Expression of wgnScer\UAS.cRa.T:Zzzz\FLAG under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PU rescues the R2-R5 axon targeting defects seen in wgn22 hemizygotes in 37.5% of cases.
Expression of wgnScer\UAS.cRa.T:Zzzz\FLAG under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-109-68 rescues the R2-R5 axon targeting defects seen in wgn22 hemizygotes in 66.7% of cases.
