    Heterozygous males and females have an approximately 20% longer life span than sibling controls, and have reduced age-specific mortality. Heterozygous females maintain lifespan extension when exposed to both control and heterozygous males. Heterozygous males analysed in the absence of female exposure are also long lived. Heterozygotes show normal resistance to oxidative stress. Heterozygotes have an increased AMP:ATP ratio and an increased ADP:ATP ratio compared to controls.

    Dietary adenine supplementation suppresses the larval lethality of homozygotes and restores lifespan and the AMP:ATP ratio to normal in heterozygotes.

    Expression of AdSSScer\UAS.cSa under the control of Scer\GAL4AdSS-F71 reverts the increased longevity phenotype of AdSSF71/+ flies. The AMP:ATP and ADP:ATP ratios are also normal in the rescued flies.
