Imprecise excision of P{EP}GE30561 removes a 2521bp region extending to both sides of the insertion site. This deletes the first exon of α-Cat, including the translation start site and much of the intergenic region between α-Cat and the predicted gene CG32230.

The cuticle of α-Cat2 mutant embryos shows severe defects in the head ectoderm that covers the developing larval brain between stages 12 and 14. The severity of this defect ranges from no holes to those that lack most of the dorsal head ectoderm. Head involution fails to occur, leaving a large anterior opening in the epidermis through which internal organs are expelled, and the epidermis/cuticle shrinks as a result of muscle contractions. In some embryos head involution defects occur without apparent holes in the head ectoderm. The ventral and dorsal cuticle appear normal and no obvious defects are observed in other embryonic tissues.
