Blocking synaptic transmission either during acquisition (during spaced training) or during retrieval (at the time of testing, 24 hours after training) in neurons expressing Scer\GAL4NP4132 has no effect on aversive long term memory. Long term memory is impaired when synaptic transmission is blocked over the whole consolidation period or in the 12 hour interval 6 hours after completion of spaced training. No impairment is seen when Scer\GAL80Mef2.mb247 is also present. Learning is unaffected.
Blocking synaptic transmission in Scer\GAL4NP4132-expressing neurons for the 12 hour interval 6 hours after massed training does not impair anesthesia-resistant (ARM) memory, either in the presence or absence of Scer\GAL80Mef2.mb247.
Blocking synaptic transmission in Scer\GAL4NP4132-expressing neurons for 24 hours following training impairs appetitive (association of an odor with sucrose) long term memory. Appetitive long term memory is normal if synaptic transmission is not blocked until 12 hours after training but is defective if it is blocked for the 12 hours immediately after training. Sensorimotor abilities are unchanged compared with controls. No impairment is seen when Scer\GAL80Mef2.mb247 is also present.
