      Mesoderm invagination is delayed (mesoderm breadth is significantly reduced), posterior midgut is variably affected (the anterior movement of pole cells due to posterior midgut invagination and tissue extension is defective) and ectoderm extension (germ band elongation) is significantly reduced in smognull/smognull embryos compared to controls. Myosin II does not accumulate at smognull/smognull embryonic cell junctions, leading to defective junction shrinkage; junctions fluctuate in length and do not shrink consistently in the ectoderm.
