spoon^mdi-1 females lay eggs with significantly reduced hatching rate and mitochondrial content when compared to controls.

spoon^mdi-1/spoon^mdi-1 adult females show severely reduced mtDNA replication in mitochondria in both germaria and egg chambers as well as progressive mitochondria clumping in mid- to late-stage egg chambers. The amount of mtDNA in eggs laid by spoon^mdi-1/spoon^mdi-1 females is highly reduced compared to wild-type, though the number of eggs produced is unchanged.

The endoplasmic reticulum structure as well as protein synthesis on the mitochondrial surface is normal in spoon^mdi-1/spoon^mdi-1 egg chambers.
