Description

Rotary ATPases or F-ATPase superfamily encompass the V-type, A-type and F-type ATPases. They are primary active transmembrane transporters that use the energy from the hydrolysis of the diphosphate bond of ATP to drive the transmembrane transport of an ion against a concentration or electrochemical gradient. They consist of multi-protein assemblies that assemble into distinct functional domains: a transmembrane channel, a peripheral membrane rotary ATPase and accessory subunits.

Notes on Group

Note that the F-ATPase, Mitochondrial Complex V, "runs in reverse", synthesizing ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate using the energy provided by the proton electrochemical gradient (proton-motive force) across the inner mitochondrial membrane generated by electron transport complexes of the respiratory chain.
