Subject: Fwd: FlyBase query: prominin vs eyes closed
Sang and Ready, 2002, Development 129(1): 143--154 described a mutation called eye closed (eyc1) and attributed this mutation to the drosophila homolog of p47. I isolated a mutation prom1 that had a similar phenotype to eyc1 and mapped to a similar position (described in Zelhof et al.,
2006, Nature 443(7112): 696--699 and its supplementary material). I did the complementation test prom1/eyc1 and the two mutations did not complement each other, indicating they were probably mutations in the same gene. I also tested the eyc p-element allele/prom1 and they did not complement either. Upon sequencing both alleles (prom1 and eyc1), I found mutations were not in p47 but rather the prominin gene. Thus prom1 is the allele I isolated and the allele labelled prom2 in the supplementary material to the Nature paper is actually eyc1.
