Mutants persist as third instar larvae for several days, dissection of wandering larvae demonstrates that their CNS is smaller than that of wild type and they lack identifiable imaginal discs. Cell proliferation can occur during the prolonged larval period. Polytene cells of mutant salivary glands and gut appear to grow normally. Clonal analysis in the eye suggests that the mutation causes cell autonomous lethality or failure to proliferate. Ectopic BrdU incorporation suggests the mutant phenotype results from prolonged S phase in the CNS.

The ectopic genomic replication that is seen in the follicle cells of stage 13 E2f2329/E2f21-188 egg chambers is partially suppressed by Mcm2rL074/+; there is an approximate 65% reduction in the number of follicle cells within an egg chamber that display ectopic genomic replication and there is an apparent reduction in the intensity of ectopic BrdU incorporation.
