Embryos derived from egg chambers containing complete homozygous follicle cell clones are completely dorsalised.

Embryos derived from pip2/pip7 females show a range of phenotypes ranging from weakly dorsalised (12.1%) to completely dorsalised (15.7%).

pip2 homozygous females produce dorsalised embryos.

Females carrying pip2 mutant ventral follicle cells produce partially dorsalized embryos. This is indicated by a tail-up phenotype and narrow ventral denticle bands.

Eggs from pip1/pip2 mothers do not have apparent vitelline membrane defects.

Embryos derived from pip1/pip2 females are dorsalised, showing symmetric folds during gastrulation and forming a tube of dorsal cuticle. Embryos derived from pip1/pip2 females expressing pipST2.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL425 show strong ventralisation, producing cuticles with rings of ventral denticle material. The orientation of gastrulation in these embryos is variable and they show muscle movement. Embryos derived from pip1/pip2 females expressing pipST2.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4241 show gastrulation movements that are inverted with respect to the intrinsic orientation of the eggshell. The most ventral structures differentiated by most of these embryos are Filzkorper, although some embryos develop ventral denticle material. Embryos derived from pip1/pip2 females expressing pipST2.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4DE1 form a ventral furrow invagination only at the posterior end. These embryos form rings of denticles at the posterior end.

Mutant embryos respond to injected purified polarizing activity (spz), and produce polarizing activity themselves.

Injection of snkΔne.T:ea into the central region of homozygous embryos causes a lateralised/ventralised phenotype.

Does not interact with RpII140wimp maternal effect.

Embryos transplanted with perivitelline fluid from Tl2 embryos exhibit a polar gastrulation. At the end of embryogenesis an almost complete restoration of pattern along the dorsoventral axis is seen. The point of injection determines the ventralmost point of the restored pattern.

Embryos derived from homozygous females are dorsalised.

maternal-effect lethal homozygous females are sterile. As in the mutant dl, lethal embryos produced by pip females lack ventral and lateral elements; all cells differentiate like the dorsal-most cells of normal embryos (Anderson and Nusslein-Volhard, 1984). Dorsalization is also observed in the pattern of ftz stripes in pip embryos (Carroll et al., 1987). Embryos are not rescued by injection of wild-type cytoplasm; injection of cytoplasm from ventralized embryos of Tl5/+ females, however, partially restores the pip+ embryonic pattern, resulting in differentiation of filzkorper in 25-40% of the treated pip embryos (Anderson et al., 1985).
