Homozygous embryos form some residual visceral mesoderm, although heart formation is disrupted.

Heterozygotes with Df(2L)OD16 exhibit loss of head structures and filzkorper. Denticle belt organisation is disrupted. No effect on dpphr4 lethality, the number of amnioserosa cells is comparable to wild type.

Anterior dorsal structures are missing, amnioserosa is missing, filzkorper significantly reduced and ventral denticle belts are expanded laterally. Injection of dppfl.cAa transcripts can suppress the mutant phenotype and restore the dorsal most pattern element, the amnioserosa.

Moderate ventralised phenotype. No amnioserosa, reduction of dorsal cuticle and increase in the width of the ventral setal belts in each segment. Leads to defective movements of the germ band. Dorsal cell fates are deleted and ventrolateral mitotic domains are expanded.

Ventralized embryos: rings or patches of ventral denticles along dorsoventral axis. Disruption of germ band extension that leads to the invagination of posterior segments into the interior of the embryo.

Zzzz\scw+tFa, Zzzz\scwgbb.PF and Zzzz\scwLD.gbb each fail to rescue the lethality of scw5/Df(2L)OD16 animals.

Dgri\scw+tFa rescues the lethality of scw5/Df(2L)OD16 animals.
