Expression of numbhs.PU using heat shock at 14 hours after puparium formation (during the division of the microchaeta sensory organ precursor cells) results in extensive bristle loss on the notum.
numbhs.PUm flies heat shocked as pupae (2x 45 minute 37oC heat shocks separated by 30, at 16-18 hours APF) exhibit loss of approximately 70% of postorbital bristles.
Phenotype resembles that of Nl1N-ts1. A one hour heat shock at the time of the birth of the sensory organ precursors causes an increase in glial cells in most lineages analyzed. The most extreme phenotype is sensory organs with all six cells being glial cells.
Transient shifts to 29oC during external sensory organ development do not perturb the formation of normal sensory cell clusters containing a neuron and a socket cell. However in a l(2)glts3 background, outer cells (such as sockets) become transformed to inner cells (such as neurons) with a consequent loss of bristles on the notum.
Heat shock during larval development causes the development of double hairs. Without heat shock flies exhibit no bristle phenotype.
After heat shock at 39oC during the time when the sensory organ precursors divide (5-9hrs of development at 25oC), embryos develop transformed external sensory organs, with a duplicated neuron with associated sheath cell, formed at the expense of the outer hair and socket support cells. Heat shock during microchaetae formation in the pupa causes both balding and twinning of bristles. Transformations to neurons underlie the balding effect, which occurs with earlier heat shocks. Transformation of socket cell to hair cell underlies the twinning effect which occurs with later heat shocks.

numbhs.PU is a non-suppressor of tormogen cell | ectopic | somatic clone phenotype of AP-2αear4
numbhs.PU is a non-suppressor of macrochaeta | somatic clone phenotype of AP-2αear4
l(2)glts3, numbhs.PU has external sensory organ phenotype
l(2)glts3, numbhs.PU has tormogen cell phenotype
The bristle loss on the notum caused by expression of numbhs.PU using heat shock at 14 hours after puparium formation is strongly suppressed by insvunspecified.
The bristle transformations seen in α-Adaptinear4 clones are unaffected by the presence of numbhs.PU and heat shock conditions (2x 45 minute 37oC heat shocks separated by 30, at 16-18 hours APF).
