Heat induced expression causes no abnormalities in antennal or leg structures.

Ectopic maxillary structures, cirri and mouth hooks, are detected in the labial and first thoracic segments after appropriate heat shock induction of P{hsDfd}. Head involution is also blocked, the ectopic external sensory organs appearing on the labial lobes are indistinguishable from those seen in other head involution-defective embryos.

Transforms thoracic segments toward a maxillary identity, as determined by the development of ectopic cirri and mouthooks.

Coexpression with abd-Ahs.PS suggests phenotypic suppression of Dfd by abd-A is dependent on gene dosage.

Dfd is required but not sufficient for 1.28 expression.

Ectopic Dfd is sufficient to activate ectopic expression of the Dll 3' ventral-lateral maxillary enhancer in other segments, and induces maxillary cirri in labial and thoracic segments. Dll mutations do not completely ameliorate this phenotype.

Maxillary palps are split into two segments.

Antibody staining reveals severe defects in es organs in thoracic segment 1 through to abdominal segment 7 and severe defects in dch3 organs in thoracic segment 2. Thoracic segment 3 was partially transformed to lch3. lch5 in abdominal segments 1 to 7 was abnormal.

Heat induced expression transforms parts of more posterior segments to maxillary identities, development of maxillary cirri and mouth hooks in labial and thoracic segments. Transformations do not occur in a Dfd mutant background.

Severe morphological transformations: defective head involution, partial transformation of many head and thoracic segments to a maxillary segment identity. Penetrance of the maxillary transformation phenotype is highest at cellular blastoderm and decreases at later stages and requires an endogenous copy of Dfd.

Heat shocked embryos that are heterozygous for both Dfdhs.PK and cncA.hs develop ectopic maxillary cirri and mouth hooks in 69% of the first thoracic segments. Heat shocked embryos that are heterozygous for both Dfdhs.PK and cncB.hs develop ectopic cirri in only 25% of the first thoracic segments.

Induction of expression in ssaSc flies causes overgrowth of the third antennal segment and of proximal parts of the homeo tarsus. Legs exhibit enlargement of the proximal part of the tarsus.

ScrC1 AntpNs-rvC3 UbxMX2 abd-AM1 Abd-BM8 larvae (deficient for activity of thoracic and abdominal homeotic genes) exhibit sclerotic plates anterior to each denticle belt. Expression of Dfdhs.PK suppresses the differentiation of the sclerotic plates.
