Expression of aopACT.GMR results in a reduced glassy eye phenotype.

Flies that express aopACT.GMR have smaller eyes than wild type, with on average 5.2, instead of 8, photoreceptors per ommatidium.

Expression of aopACT.GMR does not abolish the second mitotic wave in the eye disc.

Flies carrying aopACT.GMR have a rough eye phenotype that is more severe at 29oC than at 25oC.

Flies carrying aopACT.GMR have a rough eye phenotype.

Severely disrupted eyes due to inhibition of differentiation of photoreceptors R1-R8, the cone cells and other accessory cells in the eye.

Severe reduction in eye size and complete abolition of normal ommatidial lattice. Partial transformation of remaining eye tissue into head cuticle seen by small hairlike structures in the ventral posterior region. Pronounced increase in cell death in the anterior portion of the imaginal eye disc.

Expression of mir-7sponge.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH enhances the glassy eye phenotype seen in aopACT.GMR.

The reduced eye phenotype seen in aopACT.GMR flies is enhanced in aopACT.GMR Df(2R)mir-7-Δ1/Df(2R)exu1 flies, such that these double mutants have, on average, just 3.7 photoreceptors per ommatidium. Coexpression of the mir-7Scer\UAS.T:Disc\RFP-DsRed2 transgene, under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, prevents the enhancement caused by Df(2R)mir-7-Δ1/Df(2R)exu1.

lzts1 ; aopACT.GMR flies have a markedly reduced eye at 29oC, with the loss of all ommatidial structures. The rescue of the lzr1 mutant eye phenotype by lzmF4 does not occur if the flies also carry aopACT.GMR; most ommatidial structure is lost in these flies.

The increased apoptosis phenotype caused by aopACT.GMR is slightly suppressed by BacA\p35GMR.PH but more completely suppressed by Df(3L)X14/In(3L)WrvX1 (i.e. where W function is lacking).
