Animals expressing ocScer\UAS.cBa under the control of Scer\GAL4oc.2 in a ocγa1 mutant background die as pharate adults inside the pupal case. All the animals that survive to the pharate adult stage are females.
Homozygotes exhibit loss of both ocellar structures and frons cuticle, no effect on the lateral orbital region.
Defects in formation of the protocerebral bridge.
In hemizygotes ocelli and associated bristles are deleted, there are no remaining macrochaetae in this region. Frons cuticle is also deleted. Phenotypic series from the strongest to weakest oc allele: ocdb/ocdb > oc1/oc+ > ocγa1/oc+ > oc2/oc+ > oc1/oc1 > ocγa1/ocγa1 > oc2/oc1 > oc2/ocγa1.
Adult males hemizygous for ocγa1 have head defects. oc1/ocγa1 transheterozygotes also have head defects. The ocelli and much of the adjacent cuticle is missing. The frons region lacks its typical ridged morphology and has ectopic bristles. oc1/ocγa1 transheterozygotes also variably lack parovaria.
