Flies that express csw^{G547E.hs.2sev} in the developing eye have fewer outer photoreceptors per ommatidium (on average 3.3) than wild-type flies (6 per ommatidium).

Flies expressing csw^{G547E.hs.2sev} in a wild-type background show disruption of the normal ommatidial array due to loss of photoreceptor cells, including R3, R4 and R7. This phenotype is suppressed if the flies are also co-expressing csw^hs.2sev, csw^Δin.hs.2sev, csw^{Δtail.hs.2sev}, csw::Src64B^hs.2sev or csw::Src64B^{C583S.hs.2sev}, is not suppressed if the flies are also co-expressing csw^{R137K.hs.2sev} or csw^{SH2SH2.hs.2sev} and is only slightly suppressed if the flies are also co-expressing csw^R32K.hs.2sev or csw^CS.hs.2sev.

Flies show a rough eye phenotype that never occurs in csw^hs.2sev flies. All ommatidia are malformed and contain fewer than the normal eight photoreceptors. Ommatidia generally lack R3, R4 and R7 photoreceptors. This phenotype is suppressed by csw^hs.2sev and enhanced by heterozygosity for loss of function csw mutations. Expression of csw^{G547E.hs.2sev} blocks neural development of photoreceptor precursor cells.

However, the wild-type number is 6.
