Flies that express cswCS.hs.2sev in the developing eye have fewer outer photoreceptors per ommatidium (on average 5) than wild-type flies (6 per ommatidium).

Expression of cswCS.hs.2sev results in a rough eye phenotype, with an average of 5.5 outer photoreceptors per ommatidium. 93% of ommatidia have an R7 photoreceptor cell. cswCS.hs.2sev third larval instar eye discs show an increase in the number of apoptotic cells posterior to the morphogenetic furrow. There is also a zone of apoptotic cells anterior to the morphogenetic furrow, which is not seen in wild-type discs.

Flies expressing cswCS.hs.2sev in a wild-type background show disruption of the normal ommatidial array due to loss of photoreceptor cells, including R3, R4 and R7 (approximately 45% of ommatidia contain an R7 cell).

Flies have mildly roughened eyes due to frequent absence of photoreceptors R3, R4 and R7.

The reduced outer photoreceptor cell phenotype of eyes expressing cswCS.hs.2sev is not suppressed when eyes have a styΔ5/+ background.

The number of apoptotic cells in cswCS.hs.2sev third larval instar eye discs is increased, both anterior and posterior to the morphogenetic furrow if the flies are also carrying one copy of mask10.22.

The rough eye phenotype seen in cswCS.hs.2sev flies is enhanced by the addition of dos1.46. The addition of doshs.2sev.cHa or dosYY.hs.2sev strongly suppresses this phenotype.
