Some mask7.29/mask6.3 animals survive to the third larval instar. These larvae are significantly smaller than wild-type third instar larvae and have smaller eye-antennal discs than normal. The progression of the morphogenetic furrow does occur in these discs and some photoreceptor differentiation is seen posterior to the furrow, although many ommatidia do not contain the normal number of photoreceptor cells. The eye imaginal discs, alimentary canal and many other tissues show an elevated level of apoptosis. Adult flies show loss of outer and inner photoreceptor cells within many ommatidia in homozygous clones. The number of homozygous R7 cells in mosaic ommatidia containing both wild-type and homozygous cells is reduced.
