Imprecise excision of the EP(3)0859 P-element, deleting 8773 nucleotides, including the first 8 coding exons of tefu. Position of mutation on reference sequence inferred by FlyBase curator.
tefuΔ356 animals (created by combining Df(3R)Hsc70-4Δ356 and Hsc70-4+t14 to rescue defects cause by the disruption of the Hsc70-4+t14 gene in that Deficiency) die shortly before eclosion. They exhibit a rough eye phenotype, misshapen wings and missing or abnormal bristles. Similar effects are see when combined with Df(3R)PG4 also. tefu1/tefured31 animals exhibit rough eyes, notched wings, and shorter or missing bristles, but do survive to adulthood. Mutant wing discs exhibit extremely high levels of spontaneous apoptosis, particularly in the basal region of the disc.
Most tefuΔ356 homozygous flies (Df(3R)Hsc70-4Δ356 homozygotes in which the lack of Hsc70-4 function has been rescued by Hsc70-4+t14) show pupal lethality, although 15% eclose and are viable. These adult escapers do not survive for very long after eclosion. Escaper females do not lay eggs. Adult escapers have a notched wing phenotype. Third larval instar tefuΔ356 wing and eye discs (from Df(3R)Hsc70-4Δ356 animals in which the lack of Hsc70-4 function has been rescued by Hsc70-4+t14) show a substantial increase in the number of apoptotic cells compared to wild-type discs. Mitotic neuroblasts from tefuΔ356 brains (from Df(3R)Hsc70-4Δ356 animals in which the lack of Hsc70-4 function has been rescued by Hsc70-4+t14) often show evidence of chromosomal damage; in particular, telomere fusions are seen in 65.5% of metaphase figures. Both single and double telomere associations are seen, including fusions between sister chromatids as well as between homologous and nonhomologous chromosomes.

Expression of p53R155H.Scer\UAS.Ex under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E results in a substantial decrease in apoptosis (in the domain of Scer\GAL4en-e16E expression) in third larval instar tefuΔ356 wing discs (from Df(3R)Hsc70-4Δ356 animals in which the lack of Hsc70-4 function has been rescued by Hsc70-4+t14).
