Homozygous larvae show an increase in the number of hemocytes compared to control larvae.
Homozygous mutant larvae exhibit a marked elevation (4 fold) in circulating hemocytes. The proportion of lamellocytes (25%) is greatly increased compared to wild-type (0.3%). Mutant animals exhibit a marked enlargement of the first lobes of the lymph gland, which occasionally contain melanised hemocytes. In addition hemocytes are larger and more heterogeneous in size and shape than those found in wild-type. Many of the larger rounder hemocytes in the lymph glands and in circulation (up to 10% of all hemocytes) contain two nuclei. Up to 20% of lamellocytes also have crystal cells.
