chb5 testes are defect ridden and lack spermatids.
Most homozygotes die as pharate adults, but 1-5% reach adulthood. These male and female escapers are sterile. Homozygous adults die shortly after eclosion and females do not lay eggs. Homozygous and chb5/chb6 females have small ovaries and only a few egg chambers are found in about one-fifth of the mutant ovaries. Oogenesis never proceeds beyond mid-oogenesis.
