Homozygous adults have a blistered wing phenotype. No difference in the attachment of the two wing surfaces between by² and wild-type wings is seen during both prepupal apposition (4-6 hours after pupariation) and pupal reapposition (30-36 hours after pupariation). After eclosion, by² flies have folded wings, similar to controls. A sudden and rapid influx of hemolymph induces the unfolding of the by² wings (in the same manner as in control flies), but as soon as the by² wings begin to unfold, fluid-filled blisters appear at the distal part of the wings and the boundary of the blisters expands. The wing blisters become fixed in place after the fluid dries. by² mutants show a reduced hatching rate of laid eggs compared to wild type.
