rno3 somatic clones generated during eye development result in mostly normal adult eye morphology.

Occasionally (in less than 5% of cases) rno3 third instar larval eye disc clones develop multiple photoreceptor R8 cells within a single ommatidial cluster.

48 hours after puparium formation, rno3 mutant eye disc ommatidia contain five cone cells per cluster, increased from four per cluster in wildtype ommatidia.

rno3 mutant clones do not show increased apoptosis or cell proliferation in the developing eye disc.

Doubly mutant rno3 and Rbf15aΔ somatic clones show shiny-eye differentiation defects. Pupal eye discs are largely devoid of bristle cells, and adult eyes lack bristles. Roughly 20% of third instar larval eye disc clones show multiple photoreceptor R8 cells in some ommatidial clusters. This phenotype is not enhanced in a Nc1 background.

48 hours after puparium formation Rbf15aΔ; rno3 mutant eye disc ommatidia contain a variable number of cone cells per cluster. Some contain almost twice the number of normal cone cells, and ommatidial arrangement is very disorganised compared to control tissue.

Expression of DlScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4h-H10 significantly suppresses the multiple photoreceptor-R8 phenotype in rno3; Rbf15aΔ somatic clones in the eye.

The significant amounts of apoptosis observed near the morphogenetic furrow in Rbf15aΔ mutant clones is not enhanced by rno3. However, Rbf15aΔ; rno3 mutant clones carrying an additional mutation in Nc1 show significantly decreased levels of apoptosis.

Rbf15aΔ; rno3 mutant clones show increased cell proliferation in the posterior region of the wing disc, similar to discs mutant only for Rbf15aΔ.

The eye blistering phenotype seen in argosΔ7/argos05845 escaper adults is enhanced by rno3/+, so that it covers much of the eye.
