Johnston's organ & scolopidial cilium
Mutant adults show no electroantennogram response to a number of odorants.
Cilia are absent on nearly 80% of olfactory receptor neurons of the sensilla basiconica and sensilla trichodea of the antenna in mutant animals. The gustatory cilia inside labellar hairs are also absent.
Occasional escapers are seen that emerge as uncoordinated adults. Mutant pupae have neuronal cell bodies that appear to lack their cilia - mutant animals have deformities in the ciliary substructure. cilia are almost completely missing, sections at the midscolopale level show a lack of axonemal profiles, though basal bodies and roots are visible in many scolopales. Occasionally scolpales are seen with thin deformed membranous cilia extending from a distal body. Both homozygotes and Kap3V6/Df(1)RA37 completely lose their ability to produce sound evoked potentials from the Johnston's organ neurons. Electroretinogram responses are normal. Sperm axoneme growth is unaffected in homozygotes.

Expression of Klp64DScer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4Cha.7.4 partially restores cilia growth in the sensilla basiconica and sensilla trichodea of the antennae in Kap3V6 adults (cilia length is restored almost to wild type, while cilia volume is restored to approximately 25% of the normal level). Odor-evoked electroantennogram responses are also partly restored in these animals (assayed in response to ethyl acetate, n-butanol, benzaldehyde and propionic acid).
Expression of Klp68DScer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-YFP under the control of Scer\GAL4Cha.7.4 does not rescue cilia growth in the sensilla basiconica and sensilla trichodea of the antennae or odor-evoked electroantennogram responses in Kap3V6 adults.
The addition of Kap3V6/+ significantly enhances the recessive lethality of Klp64Dl4/Klp64Dk5 animals. The addition of Kap3V6/Y causes complete lethality. The addition of Kap3V6/+ to Klp64Dl4/Klp64Dk5 also completely abolishes the sound evoked potentials usually obtained from the Johnston's organ neurons, and enhances the ciliary defects seen in these animals.
