Expression of E(spl)SD.Scer\UAS within the morphogenetic furrow of the developing eye under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-109-68 results in a reduced eye with defects in ommatidial (facet) size and patterning.

Flies expressing E(spl)SD.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-109-68 display ~411 eye facets, compared to ~779 in wild-type controls.

Expression of E(spl)SD.Scer\UAS within the morphogenetic furrow of the developing eye under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-109-68 results in a strong loss of the four scutellar macrochaeta.

Expression of E(spl)m8-HLHSD.Scer\UAS with Scer\GAL4sca-109-68 elicits a moderately reduced eye at 24[o]C, with varied ommatidial size. Photoreceptor clusters have reduced numbers of secondary R-cells.

Expression of E(spl)m8-HLHSD.Scer\UAS with Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 elicits a severely reduced eye and loss of the scutellar macrochaetes and interommatidial bristles.

When E(spl)Scer\UAS.cKa is driven by Scer\GAL4455.2, the number of macrochaetae seen on the scutellum is reduced from 4 to zero. When E(spl)SD.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 a potent bristle suppression is seen. These mutants also exhibit a strong reduced eye phenotype. Ommatidial bristles are suppressed, and a severe attenuation of the number of ommatidia is seen, down to about 25 ommatidia per eye. Some of the ommatidia exhibit a dimpled, "blueberry" phenotype. In the eye disc a reduction of the numbers of "R8 founder" cells is seen. Pervasive and biphasic apoptosis is seen behind the morphogenetic furrow in the larval eye disc. When E(spl)Scer\UAS.cKa is driven by Scer\GAL4sca-109-68, a reduced eye phenotype is seen, with a roughening of the eye. When E(spl)SD.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4h-1J3, Scer\GAL4GMR.PF or Scer\GAL4hs.2sev no eye phenotype is seen.
