Expression of nejΔNZK.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU does not result in any obvious eye phenotypes in adults.

Flies expressing nejΔNZK.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF exhibit a slight roughening of the external retinal surface and disruption of the ommatidial bristle arrangement because of missing or extra bristles at some places.

Expression of nejΔNZK.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF results in a lack of interommatidial bristles. In addition, each ommatidium appears to contain one to two extra photoreceptor cells.

Expression of nejΔNZK.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF results in adults with a slight roughening of the external surface of the eye and a loss of interommatidial bristles. Pupal retinas contain a normal complement of accessory cone and pigment cells. Sections through the adult retina show that ommatidia contain one or two extra photoreceptor cells per ommatidium, and this phenotype can also be seen in the larval eye imaginal disc. These extra photoreceptor cells are in the right position to be the "mystery cells" being recruited into the ommatidium. Expression of nejΔNZK.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.2sev appears to have no effect on eye development. Expression of nejΔNZK.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH strongly inhibits eye development in the dorsal half of the eye, while pattern formation proceeds in the ventral domain. The moderate rough eye phenotype caused by expression of nejΔNZK.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF is enhanced if the flies also carry nej3/+.
