shps1 is male sterile if in transheterozygosity with Df(3R)crb-F89-4, Df(3R)crb87-4, Df(3R)crb87-5, Df(3R)Exel6199, Df(3R)Exel8178 or Df(3R)P3-4-7, and is male semi-fertile if in transheterozygosity with In(3R)Ubx7LLatsR or Df(3R)Exel6198.

shps1 homozygous males (but not females) are near sterile: mating with wild-type females leads to severe decreases in egg fertilization, egg laying, in egg hatching rate, and leads to a moderate decrease in hatch-to-adult rate, as compared to heterozygous and wild-type controls. Wild-type females mated to shps1 homozygous males exhibit severe decreases in the number of sperm stored in the seminal receptacle and spermatheca, but not in the uterus, and are less effective in suppressing female re-mating, but do not exhibit obvious differences in uterus morphology or in mating plug formation, as compared to females mated to controls males.

shps1 homozygous males do not exhibit any significant changes in the number of sperm stored in seminal vesicles, as compared to controls; shps1 sperm exhibit small but significant motility defects (i.e. beat frequency, beat speed and intensity index) before and after transfer to females, as compared to heterozygous controls.

1 hour or 24 hours after copulation, the amount of sheepishsheepish sperm stored in the female sperm storage organs (seminal receptacle and spermatheca) was significantly less than the controls.

Females mated with sheepishsheepish males lay significantly fewer inseminated eggs than controls.

Comments

The male sterility phenotype of either shps1 homozygotes or shps1/Df(3R)P3-4-7 transheterozygotes are rescued by one copy of shpsScer\UAS.cTa alone (which includes the regulatory regions upstream of shps coding region).
