Detailed Description

Expression of dsxUAS.male under the control of Scer\GAL4insc-Mz1407 from mid second instar stage, in combination with a Gal80[ts] transgene, does not affect the number of neuroblasts in the thoracic segments of the late third instar male larval ventral nerve cord, compared to controls.

Expression of dsxM.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4dsx.KI results in masculinized XX females that display male-like abdominal pigmentation and sex combs; however, the genitalia, although masculinized, are rotated and often malformed.

Female flies expressing both dsxM.Scer\UAS and dsxF.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4dsx.KI show a significant increase in neuron numbers in dsx-pC1, dsx-pC2 and dsx-SN (but not dsx-pC3) clusters in the brain and in all of the VNC clusters compared with wild-type females with a concomitant increase in projections and formation of contralateral connections. However, the number of dsx-pC1 and dsx-pC2 neurons is still significantly lower than in wild-type males.
