Expression of Zzzz\trafl.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS in XY males reduces the number of bristles forming the male sex comb structure in the foreleg basitarsus. In some cases, intersexual bristles are found between the sex comb-like bristles. In a very few cases, in which no sex comb-like bristles are found, the last transverse row is usually only partially rotated. Both male and female external terminalia are found. These comprise the female 8th tergite and vaginal plate structures, plus the male genital arch, lateral plates, claspers and penis apparatus. The anal plates are always intersexual. Increasing the dose of Zzzz\trafl.Scer\UAS leads to a reduction in the frequency of male structures, and a corresponding increase in the frequency of female structures - although complete female transformation is never observed.

Expression of Zzzz\trafl.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS in XX pseudomales homozygous for tra4 reduces the number of bristles forming the male sex comb structure in the foreleg basitarsus.

Expression of Zzzz\trafl.Scer\UAS in a tra2B/Df(2R)trix background, under the control of Scer\GAL4da.G32 does not affect male morphology, indicating the endogenous tra2 protein is necessary in female development. Reducing, but not removing tra2, through expression of Zzzz\trafl.Scer\UAS in a tra2B/+ background, under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.PS leads to a significant reduction in the size of the female genital structures as well as a significant increase in the size of the male genital structures.
