mir-285KO.w- homozygotes are viable, fertile, and show no obvious developmental defect when raised under normal conditions.

mir-285KO.w-/mir-285KO.w-, mir-285KO.w-/Df(3L)Exel6115 and mir-285KO.w-/Df(3L)BSC458 adults and larvae have a compromised blood-brain barrier, as dye injected into the body cavity is able to diffuse into their adult retina or third instar larval brain; this is not observed in mir-285KO.w-/Df(3L)BSC840 or in mir-285KO.w-/+ and wild-type controls. Subperineurial glial cells in mir-285KO.w-/mir-285KO.w- larvae frequently show disrupted/discontinuous septate junctions (Dlg immunostaining), and exhibit significant increases in nuclear size and in ploidy, as compared to controls. mir-285KO.w-/mir-285KO.w- larvae also exhibit a significant increase in brain volume.
