GAL4::VP16 and a Disc\RFP3xP3.cUa marker flanked by loxP sites is inserted in Lk immediately following the ATG translational start site (+4bp to +10bp, relative to start site).
LkGAL4::VP16 homozygous and heterozygous mutant adults survive significantly longer under starvation or desiccation stress, compared to controls; they have significantly reduced proboscis extensions in response to tarsal sucrose, as well as significantly reduced long-term, but not short-term food intake, compared to controls, with a stronger effect in homozygotes; they have significantly reduced locomotor activity and metabolic rate (carbon dioxide consumption), compared to controls.
LkGAL4::VP16 is partially rescued by LkUAS.cZa/Scer\GAL4Lk-GAL4::VP16
