rdgB2 mutant adults display progressive degeneration phenotype of rhabdomeres in peripheral photoreceptors, which are completely lost by day 5 post-eclosion, whereas the central UV-sensitive photoreceptor is spared.
Flies are defective in electroretinogram light response maintenance and also in the dark recovery. 7 day old flies show massive photoreceptor cell loss and ommatidial disorganisation.
Adult flies undergo retinal degeneration, characterised by dark-satining cell bodies and loss of rhabdomeres. Photoreceptor cells R1-R6 are more severely affected than photoreceptor cell R7, and degenerate before R7. The electroretinogram light response is abolished by saturating light treatment.
The electroretinogram (ERG) light response of 1 day old homozygous flies raised in a 12 hour light/dark cycle has a very small amplitude. 6 day old flies show massive retinal degeneration including reduced or absent rhabdomeres and holes in the retina. At older ages the R7 rhabdomere and photoreceptor also degenerate. Newly eclosed rdgB2 flies show a wild-type ERG light response amplitude, but are defective in terminating the ERG light response. In addition, these flies also show prolonged dark recovery times compared to wild-type.
Rhabdomeres and photoreceptor cell bodies degenerate gradually after eclosion. Retinal degeneration starts with the disappearance of SRC. Ocellar photoreceptors also degenerate and degeneration of the SRC is observed.
Retinas of norpA36; rdgB2 mutants fail to degenerate in the dark or light, rdgB2; P{DGq1-203} retinas degenerate in the dark and norpA36; rdgB2; P{DGq1-203} triple mutant retinas fail to degenerate in the light or dark.

The retinal degeneration phenotype of rdgB2 flies is suppressed by su(rdgB)6969; the time course of deep pseudopupil loss is slowed compared to rdgB2 flies, but the electroretinogram light response of newly eclosed rdgB2; su(rdgB)6969 flies is nearly identical to that of rdgB2 flies.
The R1-R6 and electroretinogram phenotypes are completely rescued by Mus\RdgBninaE.PC.
The rdgB2 phenotype is not rescued by Rnor\PITPNAninaE.PM. rdgB::Rnor\PITPNAninaE.PM fails to rescue rdgB2, and may cause additional adverse effects; the initial ERG light response of rdgB2 flies carrying rdgB::Rnor\PITPNAninaE.PM has a significantly smaller amplitude than that of rdgB2 flies.
The rdgB2 electroretinogram phenotype is partially rescued by Mmus\RdgB2ninaE.PL. 8 day old rdgB2 flies carrying Mmus\RdgB2ninaE.PL have slightly smaller rhabdomeres than normal and show some ommatidial disorganisation. 14 day old rdgB2 flies carrying Mmus\RdgB2ninaE.PL begin to show the rdgB2 retinal degeneration phenotype.

6 day old and 30 day old rdgB2 flies carrying rdgBninaE.PM have a wild-type ERG light response and show little evidence of retinal degeneration, showing the loss of the R7 and R8 rhabdomeres in some ommatidia. 17 day old rdgB2 flies carrying rdgBPITP.ninaE have a wild-type ERG light response and show little evidence of retinal degeneration, except for the loss of R7 cells. Both the ERG light response termination and dark recovery time phenotypes are substantially, but not completely, rescued if the flies are carrying either rdgBT59E.ninaE or rdgBPITP.T59E.ninaE. 6 day old rdgB2 flies carrying either rdgBT59E.ninaE or rdgBPITP.T59E.ninaE have small or missing rhabdomeres and holes in the retina. rdgB2 ; rdgBT59E.ninaE flies have a more severe phenotype than rdgB2 flies.
