The P{PZ}Cyt-c-dbln1 insertion maps within both the Cyt-c-d and CG31808 transcription units (overlapping genes). In Cyt-c-d, the insertion site is close to the boundary of the first exon and intron. FlyBase curator comment: FBrf0190354 demonstrates that the mutant phenotype of the P{PZ}Cyt-c-dbln1 insertion is caused by an effect on Cyt-c-d.

Cyt-c-dbln1 mutants show defects in spermatid individualization.

At 42 hours after puparium formation (APF), homozygous retinas have extra interommatidial cells compared to wild type.

Lysates from 4 hour old prepupae heterozygous or homozygous for Cyt-c-dbln1 show no reduction in caspase activation compared to wild type.

Cysts from mutant male testes show multiple defects in spermatogenesis prior to individualisation, including failure to carry out polyglycylation of axonemal microtubules, and aberrant development of the major and minor mitochondrial derivatives.

Cyt-c-dbln1/Df(2L)H20 are infertile. Spermatogenesis is normal up to the individuation stage and spermatids form mature looking nuclei. Although the initial assembly of the "individualisation complex" at the head of the cyst appears normal, there is a failure of cytoplasm to collect into a normal cystic bulge and to translocate caudally. In addition, these cysts lack the caspase activation seen at this stage in wild-type cysts.
