wupA8384 males die during embryogenesis and have hypodermal and neural phenotypes. wupA8384/+ females that do not survive die at the embryonic or first larval instar stages. Those that survive to eclosion (10-30%) have normal morphology. The semi-dominant lethality of wupA8384 is not complemented by l(1)16Fe1 or the '23437' chromosome (in which l(1)16Fm and l(1)16Fe are affected).

Embryos have a thin layer of cuticle in the cephalic region. Heterozygotes with wupAhdp-3 have only remnants of the degenerating fibrillar muscles (dorsal-longitudinal muscle, DLM and dorso-ventral muscle, DVM) and no tergal depressor of trochanter muscle (TDT). Heterozygous females are 30% viable.

Abnormal embryonic development: thin layer of cuticle but no hypoderm or muscles are found at the postgnathal-thoracic region.

Flies manifest chronic vibration of their appendages as well as abnormal action potentials.
