    Description

FlyBase curator comment: this entry is used to capture phenotypic information when the particular allele (or allele combination) used by the author could not be determined but the context of the experiment suggests that the phenotype being described is some kind of loss of function.

Hypomorphic mutations in klu result in a partial loss of cell death within the interommatidial lattice in the pupal eye. This results in on average 1.3 additional cells per ommatidial unit, which represents at least one-third of the cells that are normally removed by cell death. The number of additional cells does not change significantly from that seen for the hypomorphic mutations when an amorphic allele of klu in trans to a deficiency for the klu region is used.

Mutants show a duplication of the RP2 neurons. kluunspecified Drunspecified double mutants show an additive phenotype with respect to gain of RP2 neurons.

kluunspecified/+ strongly suppresses the formation of supernumerary type II neuroblasts which is seen in brat11/bratDG19310 larval brains.

The formation of supernumerary type II neuroblasts is suppressed in homozygous kluunspecified type II neuroblast clones in brat11/bratk06028 larval brains.

Homozygosity for kluunspecified significantly reduces the number of supernumerary neuroblasts and restores intermediate neural progenitor cells and ganglion mother cells in type II neuroblast clones in the larval brain expressing Nintra.GS.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4wor.PA (analysed 72 hours after clone induction).

Homozygosity for kluunspecified significantly reduces the number of supernumerary neuroblasts per clone as well as the frequency of the clones containing more than one neuroblast in type I neuroblast clones in the larval brain expressing Nintra.GS.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PP.

The eye phenotype caused by rprGMR.PW is mildly but consistently suppressed by kluunspecified/+. The eye phenotype caused by grimGMR.PC is mildly but consistently suppressed by kluunspecified/+. kluunspecified/+ strongly suppresses the eye phenotype caused by WGMR.PG; the adult eye is dramatically increased in size and the pattern of the ommatidia is almost normal. kluunspecified/+ suppresses the rough eye phenotype seen in EgfrE1 adults. The rough eye phenotype caused by Ras85DV12.sev is suppressed by kluunspecified/+. kluunspecified/+ enhances the extra cell phenotype seen in the retina of animals expressing Ras85DV12.hs using heat shock at 24 hours after puparium formation; the double mutant animals have an average of 20.03 +/- 0.2 cells per ommatidial unit (compared to an average of 18.5 +/- 0.3 cells per ommatidial unit in animals expressing Ras85DV12.hs at the same time in a klu+ background).
