Female flies with expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa driven by Scer\GAL4Toll-6-D42 maintain flight for longer durations than parental controls (but less than wild type) during most of their lifespan except the oldest age measured (50 days); male mutants are not significantly different to controls. Wingbeat frequency decreases with age (just as in controls) but is significantly lower than controls for Scer\GAL4Toll-6-D42>Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa flies at older ages (both males and females). Scer\GAL4Toll-6-D42>Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa flies at older ages are significantly more active than controls (especially females).

Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4da.G32 slightly shortens the life span of adults flies compared to controls.

Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4D42 results in a moderate decrease in lifespan.

Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of either Scer\GAL4elav.PU, Scer\GAL4repo.PU or Scer\GAL4Mhc.PU has no major effect on longevity. Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4da.G32 has no effect on mitochondrial ultrastructure in the indirect flight muscles.

Flies expressing Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PU show increased resistance to paraquat compared to controls. These flies show wild-type sensitivity to zinc.

Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act does not rescue the reduction in lifespan seen in flies under hyperoxia.

Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4ple.PF rescues the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons that is seen in flies under hyperoxia.

Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of either Scer\GAL4Act5C or Scer\GAL4da.G32 increases mean life span by 15-30%. Expression of Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4ple.PF suppresses the hypoxia-induced dopaminergic neuron degeneration seen in control flies.

Flies expressing Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.Switch.PO in the presence of RU486 show no alteration in lifespan compared to controls.

Simultaneous expression of both Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa and Hsap\SOD1G41S.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4Toll-6-D42 significantly increases adult lifespan compared to controls.

Flies expressing Hsap\SOD1Scer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4D42 in a wild-type background have mean and maximum adult lifespans up to 40% longer than isogenic controls. The pre-mortality plateau phase of the life curve (less than 5% mortality) is extended from approximately 27 to approximately 50 days.
