The morphology of Ccap/burs neurons in wandering third instar larvae is largely unchanged by expression of cbtEP2237 under the control of Scer\GAL4Ccap.PP compared to controls, although there are fewer and smaller boutons at the peripheral endings. In contrast, P14 pharate adults expressing cbtEP2237 under the control of Scer\GAL4Ccap.PP show severe defects in the morphology of these neurons, including the loss of many central neurites and efferent projections, with the remaining efferents having substantially fewer or shorter branches and large varicosities. The defect in the pharate adults appears to be due to an arrest of the remodeling of the Ccap/burs neurons at an early stage of neurite outgrowth, in both the central nervous system and the periphery.

Mutant larvae expressing cbtEP2237 under the control of Scer\GAL4elav-C155 have reduced or abnormal synapses.

Expression of cbtEP2237 under the control of Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 results in too many or too few scutellar or dorsocentral macrochaetae. Sensory organs with two shafts and one socket, one shaft and no socket, one socket and no shaft and smaller shaft morphology are seen. Ocelli are absent or greatly reduced.
