Mutants have a rough eye phenotype. The ommatidia are irregular and not hexagonal in shape (in contrast to wild-type flies). The interommatidial bristles are irregularly positioned and multiple bristles are often found in place of the single bristle seen at each corner of the ommatidium in wild-type flies. The number of photoreceptor cells in each ommatidium is often abnormal and the precise position of the photoreceptor cells is also altered. The pigment cell lattice does not have a hexagonal arrangement, resulting in disorganisation of the retina. The photoreceptor cells which are missing from the ommatidia can be seen in the region below the fenestrated membrane. 20-40% of mutant fertilised eggs fail to hatch.
